Nicoll Hernandez-Polanco (A# 089 841 646), a transgender woman from Guatemala, is currently being detained in the all-male wing of ICE's Florence Service Processing Detention facility in Florence, Arizona. Nicoll came to the United States seeking asylum in October 2014 because she was the target of violent attacks, constant harassment, and discrimination in her country of origin. Unfortunately, at the hands of ICE, Nicoll is now being subjected to the same treatment she seeks protection from.

Graham Moore won Best Adapted Screenplay for "The Imitation Game" which tells the story of Alan Turing, the mathemetician who helped solve the Enigma code during World War II but was later prosecuted for being gay and driven too suicide.  Graham, an out gay man himself who attempted suicide at 16, offered this message of hope during his acceptance speech.

Hypothermia Hotline

Mayor Muriel Bowser has activated the city's Cold Emergency Plan in anticipation of frigid, dangerous weather beginning lassting through the early morning hours of Monday, February 16, 2015. A Cold Emergency Alert is issued whenever the actual or forecast temperature, including the wind-chill factor, falls to 15˚F or to 20˚F with precipitation.  By activating a Cold Emergency, Mayor Bowser authorizes the District to implement additional measures beyond traditional sheltering, such as warming sites, to keep residents who are homeless warm and safe. Individuals in the District who are homeless should call the Shelter Hotline toll-free at 1-800-535-7252.  If you notice someone who needs help, please call the hotline.

Habitat for Humanity at the DC LGBT Center

Habitat for Humanity stopped by the DC Center on Feb 13th.  We are thrilled to be partnering with them once again for the Rainbow House.  We'll be raising money for and building a house for a family in need.  Habitat is welcoming of ALL low income  families (and individuals), so if you know someone who could benefit, please let us know!  #housing #fairness #DC #givingback
